| Linda | LCollinsAZ@cox.net | Yes | 1989 | I met Vance when we were both at Rio Salado and working with the computer labs. Vance’s smile and laugh are unforgettable. He was and always will be one of my very best friends. I remember when we decided to participate in the annual Fiesta Days parade in Cave Creek many years ago. Vance was right there with me riding in my old convertible as we tossed out candy and Rio Salado pencils to the kids along the parade route. I still have a picture somewhere in my office I will try to scan and post. It was a great day and one of several annual parades a group of us participated in. We came back to our house after the parade and sat on the back deck and just relaxed and continued the party.
I have also been a “member” of the ESP parties that Ed has mentioned. We had some good times and the pictures bring back some great memories (and some huge laughs). Vance and I ran into each other a little more than a year ago in Gilbert. Funny, as I was from Cave Creek and he was from central Phoenix. I had moved to Gilbert to be closer to MCC and Vance was down there at an autoshop with a friend. The last time I heard from Vance was May 9 and we were planning to get together for lunch after I returned from an internship visit at Disneyworld.
I miss my dear friend.

Gretchen | | Shay | shay.johnson@domail.maricopa.edu | Yes | 2004 | | | Ed | ed@thekeltys.com | Yes | 1989 | | | Rivko | bvaandrk@earthlink.net | Yes | 1997 | I met Vance because he was a member of the ACLU (and a very proud member as well, so I'm sure he would be glad for all those reading this to know that) and I was on the fund raising committee. So one day I called him and suggested we meet to talk about ACLU and his donations etc. We did at the Eggery, which we then continued to do once a year until November 2007. During those breakfasts (which often turned into 2 hour or more events) we talked about everything...his family, his work, his growing up and trying different things until he found what he seemed so much to enjoy and of course politics and civil liberties. The breakfasts (and by the way he always ordered the same thing -- bisquits and gravey) which had started as 'my job' in the organization, quickly became like a friendship and I always eagerly looked forward to them. Vance was also so kind (which as I grow older I see as a more and more important characteristic) in addition to being knowledgeable about so many things (because he has such wide interests and every year I seemed to learn something new about him). So our conversations were just very difficult to end. I had invited Vance to sit at 'my table' for the March 2008 ACLU Annual Dinner and he came but as the table consisted of 10 people I hardly had a chance to talk to him. I was eagerly looking forward to calling him in October or November to set up our annual breakfast. His death will leave a 'hole' in my life even tho my acquaintance with him was so limited in comparison to so many others whose posts I read on this blog or web or whatever (Vance accepted me even with my computer illiteracy). I hope that all his remaining relatives and friends retain as wonderful memories of him as I have. His death strikes me as among those that definitely fall into the 'it isn't fair' category -- young, kind, intelligent, dedicated to his work and making the world a better place in so many ways. May your rest in peace Vance. | | Debbie | d.krumtinger@gcmail.maricopa.edu | Yes | 1990 | | | Carol | clee758@gmail.com | Yes | 1977 | It will be the little things that you will remember, the quiet moments, the smiles, the laughter.
It will be the memories of these little things
that bring the smiles back again. | | Sharron (Penny) | sharronluther@aol.com | Yes | 1950 | | | Tom | tom.mcglew@domail.maricopa.edu | Yes | March, 2005 | In March 2005 I joined MATEC and instantly became a colleague first and then a friend of Vance's (timeframe between these events was probably a day or two). Vance was so easy to relate to especially, since our ages and expereinces in old computer technologies were very close to each other. What brought us to the friends level was our love of all mechanical things call "automobiles." Vance and I came into MATEC at the same time each day usually before the remainder of our MATEC colleagues which gave us time to chat on the latest automotive topics.
I miss those chats today as I a learned so much from him on not just automibiles but also on myraids of other technology topics which Vance always had a keen insight to make you think about and maybe even go investigate on your own. As I have read from the many contributors to this blog how Vance always made you feel special, I too felt the same for knowing this wonderful human being. | | | robert.samia@smcmail.maricopa.edu | No | 1994 | I remember Vance when I was working part time at WorkForce Development. He was always available to share thoughts and ideas. He handed me many of the new projects he was working on after he did his part when welcoming new companies into Phoenix. We always went to lunch at the Brown Bag with John Lewis and Bertha Landrum. When I left to be at the campuses, and when I'd see him at the District or elsewhere, he'd always have that smile he has in the posted picture. You'll be missed, Vance! | | Lara | lara.sayer@domail.maricopa.edu | No | 2007 | Although I only knew Vance for 16 months - that's equal to about 20+ years of advice from the average person. | | | | Yes | | | | Lann | lvannoy@me.com | Yes | 2007 | I didn't know Vance for very long, but his influence was felt even by a fairly new member of the BMW club. I know that his talents were very valuable and here we are a year later, still not able to complete the club activities that he did so easily... he is very much missed! | | Very nice site! | Very nice site! | No | Very nice site! | Very nice site! | | Mark | mark.viquesney@domail.maricopa.edu | Yes | 2006 | I was lucky to work with Vance for the last two years. How many times in the last few days did I find something that I would think, "Vance would like this. Oh wait, he probably already knew about it and knows more than is printed here." |
